Lace Storage Book (Книга кружев)

Hello, everyone!
I'm sure that more than one has at least a dozen meters (or yards) of all kinds of ribbons, string, lace... 
The question is "how do to keep all this?"
I was looking for a solution when I found a kind of book or mini album (maybe?) 
and I thought it was one of the best options to store my lace.
So I decided to make test one for my handmade laces.
I used this old sweater piece to cover the structure. I think it looks soft and comfortable.
I cut some paperclips from different watercolor paper collection.
I tried to make a transition from Shabby chic to Boho-chic using some strong colors. 
I thought that the reference to Matthew would be very appropriate in this case.
To keep the laces I used the classic spine binding.
This is the inside. 
I keep the small pieces in transparent bags.
I take advantage of the sweater buttoned part for the back.
I think this is lovely in one way.
 This is my first attempt so what do you think?
I still have many laces to keep, so if I see that it works I'll do more!

Estilo "Boho" Bohemio

Abrimos la nueva sección de estilos en Srapbooking con el estilo Bohemio, 
más conocido como Boho.
Hi everyone!
The new section "Style in Scrapbooking" starts with the Bohemian style better known as Boho.
Creo que ha sido una locura empezar por éste por la complejidad, la verificación de los datos 
(a veces complicada), la falta de buenos ejemplos, y encima no me gusta este estilo; soy de las que ven un trabajo Boho y les da dolor de cabeza. Si bien es cierto que no todo es "Boho" y que algunos de sus subestilos dulcifican esta explosión visual... ¡¿a quién se le ocurrió la idea?!
I think it was crazy to start with this one because of its complexity, the verification of data sometimes was complicated or lacked good examples... Also I don't like this style very much. 
I'm one of those people who see a Boho style work and it gives me a headache. Although it's true that not everything is "Boho" and some substyles sweeten this visual explosion but... 
Who came up with the idea?!

¿De dónde surge el estilo Bohemio? 
Where did the Bohemian style come from?
La palabra "boho" proviene de la palabra francesa "Bohémien", término usado para referirse al grupo étnico de los gitanos, los  "Bohemios", que habitaban la Bohemia, región donde hoy situamos a la República Checa. 
The word "boho" comes from the french word "Bohémien", a term used to refer to the ethnic group of gypsies, the "Bohemians", who lived in Bohemia, the region where we now locate the Czech Republic.

Por su estilo de vida y filosofía se les asociaba con el "espíritu libre" en el sentido de no estar sujeto a las reglas establecidas por la sociedad del momento. Son considerados oriundos de la India pero llegaron a recorrer toda Europa llevando una vida nómada, de ahí la ambigüedad y eclecticismo de este estilo, puesto que lo más probable es que se inspiraran en las diferentes culturas por las que anduvieron. Sus vestimentas, las condiciones climatológicas de la zona (las bajas temperaturas) junto con la actitud que tenían hacia el dinero nos aportan datos acerca de este estilo: rotos, parches, diferentes tipos de tejidos y/o colores unidos entre sí, capas y capas de ropa, desgaste en el tejido... Pero, al mismo tiempo, estamos ante un estilo glamuroso, un escaparate de brillo, color y adornos de lo más variopinto (debido, en parte, a su paso por los salones de antaño donde se les pagaba para entretener a la sociedad de la época con sus cantos y bailes).
Due to their lifestyle and philosophy they're associated with the "free spirit" in the sense of not being subject to the established rules by the society of the moment. They're considered native of India but came to travel throughout Europe leading a nomadic life, hence the ambiguity and eclecticism of this style because most likely to be inspired by the different cultures. Their clothes, the weather conditions of the area (low temperatures) with the attitude they had towards money give us information about this style: broken, patches, different types of fabrics and / or colors joined together, layers and layers of clothes, wear in the fabric... But, at the same time, we are facing a glamorous style, a showcase of brightness, color and motifs of the most varied (in part, because of its passage through the salons where they're paid them to entertain the society of the time with their songs and dances).

Esta filosofía del "espíritu libre" empezó a alcanzar popularidad durante el siglo XIX en Europa. Así, el término "bohemio" empezó a usarse, primero, para describir a los artistas, músicos y poetas de la época y, más tarde, para los llamados "antisistema". Los Bohemios adoptaron también ese "estilo" de vestimenta pero más por las dificultades propias de la vida, su falta constante de ingresos (en el caso de muchos aristas) y cierto aire romántico que aún impregnaba el ambiente artístico. A partir de la década de los 60 los hippies volvieron a poner de moda la filosofía bohemia: el ser "boho" ya no sólo era considerado como la representación del ser creativo, que va contra corriente , sino más bien como la expresión visible de protesta hacia los convencionalismos sociales, el consumo... En la década del 2000 el estilo bohemio se transformó en lo que hoy se conoce como Boho-chic, cuya máxima exponente es Iris Apfel, la cual redefinió el estilo imponiendo la regla de  mantener un cierto equilibrio de buen gusto para evitar llegar al ridículo. Y aquí es cuando este estilo deja ser sinónimo de nomadismo, pobreza, rebelión a lo establecido para convertirse en exactamente todo lo contrario.
This philosophy of "free spirit" began to be popular during the 19th century in Europe. The term "Bohemian" was used to describe the artists, musicians and poets of the time and, later, for the "anti-system" moviment. The Bohemians also adopted that clothing style but more for the difficulties of life, their constant lack of income (in the case of many artists) and for a certain romantic air that still permeated the artistic environment. In 1960s hippies made bohemian philosophy fashionable again: the "boho" being was not only considered as the representation of "be creative" and to go against the current, but rather as the visible expression of protest towards social conventions, consumerism... In 2000s the bohemian style was redefined as Boho-chic, whose  highest exponent is Iris Apfel. Now we must maintain "good taste" to avoid becoming ridiculous. And this is when this style is now set to the opposite instead of synonymous with nomadism, poverty, rebellion against the established. 

 Entonces, ¿cómo definimos el estilo Boho?
So, how to define the Boho style?
Éste no es un estilo sencillo o fácil; es una explosión de color, capas, detalles, que busca la originalidad. No deja indiferente a nadie: o lo encuentras "impactantemente fascinante" o simplemente te sobrecarga la vista. Llegar a realizar un trabajo de estilo Boho es todo un reto porque requiere imaginación y, al mismo tiempo, conseguir transmitir la combinación "perfecta" entre la idea de "total libertad creativa" y armonía en una composición donde "reina" el desorden. 
This is not a simple or easy style to define. It's an explosion of color, layers, details, which seeks originality. It doesn't leave anyone indifferent: either you find it "shockingly fascinating" or this is too much. To do a Boho style work is a challenge because it requires imagination and to combine perfectly well the idea of "total creative freedom" and harmony in a composition where "disorder" reigns at the same time.

Pero ¿qué lo hace diferente del resto de estilos?
But what makes it different from other styles?
Aunque sí podemos mezclarlo con otros estilos, el Boho tiene sus características que lo hacen diferente del resto. Recordemos que éste es un estilo ecléctico, une muchas cosas distintas: diferentes paletas de color, materiales, adornos... pero todo tiene su sitio en la composición; hay orden es este desorden o, más bien, éste es un estilo donde el desorden está debidamente calculado.
Well, we can make a mix with other styles, but the Boho has its characteristics that make it different from the rest. Remember that this is an eclectic style than unites many different things: different palettes of color, materials, embellishments... but everything has its place in the composition; there is order in is this disorder or, rather, this is a style where the disorder is properly calculated.

-Se suelen evitar las formas geométricas comunes (cuadrados, triángulos...) dando prioridad a lineas suaves, sencillas. 
-Usually avoid common geometric shapes (squares, triangles...) giving priority to soft and simple lines.

-Este estilo está, literalmente, lleno de tela, de cintas, de todo elemento suave al tacto, satinado, aterciopelado... Ésto llama a combinar, a la experimentación de lana con gasa, tela con arpillera, seda con pana... 
-This style is literally full of fabric, ribbons, everything soft hand, satin, velvety... This calls to combine, to the experimentation of wool with gauze, fabric with burlap, silk with corduroy...

-Capas y capas y capas de material que se consigue mediante pliegues, cosidos... acompañados de volantes, flecos... La cuestión es dar volumen, que haya abundancia de texturas. Tips para unificar telas: si la máquina de coser no es lo tuyo y coser a mano va a ser complicado, usa una grapadora o alfileres (¡pégalos!); siempre podrás cubrir esas zonas con otros materiales y/o adornos. 
-Layers and layers and layers of material made by folds, stitching... accompanied by ruffles, fringes... The point is to give volume, that there is abundance of textures. Tips to unify fabrics: if the sewing machine is not your cup of tea and sewing by hand is going to be complicated, use a stapler or pins (stick them!). You can always cover those areas with other materials and / or embellishments.

-No hay restricciones de color. Puedes hacer un trabajo monocromático o  usando todos los colores del arcoiris. Este estilo está abierto a contrastes de color.
-There are no color restrictions. You can do a monochromatic work or using all the colors of the rainbow. This style is open to contrasts of color too.

-Los adornos suelen ser grandes, colgantes, de madera y/o cristal, brillantes, artesanales... Aquí hay que ser original. 
-Embellishments are usually large, hanging, of wood and / or glass, bright, handmade... Be original!

-El Mixed Media es una técnica perfecta para este estilo tan cargado.
-Mixed Media is a perfect technique for this overloaded style.

-Aunque más propias de Retro o del Steampunk, suelen usarse ilustraciones del "Art Nouveau". Y aunque algunos ven el hecho de usar estas ilustraciones como signo de que ésto es en sí un "subestilo" (lo que sería el Boho-Art Nouveau) yo no voy a tratarlo como tal por las pocas referencias, material y ejemplos disponibles.
-Illustrations of "Art Nouveau" are often used although more typical of Retro or Steampunk. Even if some see the fact of using these illustrations as a sign that this is in itself a "substyle" (what would be the Boho-Art Nouveau) I'll not treat it as such because of the few references, material and examples available.

El estilo Boho como tal se llama Estilo Gitano o Bohemio clásico. Tal y como indica su nombre, este estilo tiene una temática definida, con un predominio de colores muy vivos, una decoración muy pesada a nivel visual y el uso de cualquier elemento que ayude a recrear la idea romántica e idealizada que se tiene de lo que era la vida gitana del siglo XIX. Los trabajos más comunes son los Junk Journals (diarios creativos realizados con restos de todo lo que se te ocurra).  
The Boho style as such is called Gypsy style or Classic Bohemian. As the name suggests, this style has a definite theme with a predominance of bright colors, a very heavy decoration and to use of any element that helps to recreate the romantic and idealized idea that one has of what it was the gypsy life of the nineteenth century. The most common works are the Junk Journals (creative diaries made with remnants of everything you can think of).
 

Hacer combinaciones entre dos o más estilos a veces es algo inevitable, sobre todo si uno no tiene claro qué diferencia un estilo de otro (sobre todo si son muy parecidos). La mezcla de un estilo con otro o el uso de un determinado elemento de manera exclusiva ha dado lugar a un nuevo estilo o subestilo. Por lo que voy a intentar hilar muy fino y ser muy estricta con cada definición para facilitar la identificación de una combinación o subestilo frente a otro parecido.
Making combinations between two or more styles is sometimes inevitable mainly if one is unclear what makes different (especially if they're very similar). The mix between styles or the use of a certain element in an exclusive way has given rise to a new style or substyle. So I'm going to try to be very clear and very strict with each definition to facilitate the identification of a combination or substyle compared to another similar.
Empecemos con la combinación más famosa que hay en cuanto a estilos sobrecargados: el Shabby chic vintage. ¿Cómo entra en Boho en está combinación? De dos maneras:
Let's start with the most famous combination in terms of overloaded styles: the Shabby chic Vintage. Boho style enter into this combination in two ways:
  • Boho-chic. El estilo Shabby Chic es ya de por sí cargado, los trabajos son delicados y coquetos, predomina el uso de todo tipo de encajes, el estampado floral, la gasa, el tul, las flores... Con el Boho se sobrecarga aún más la composición pero siempre tendrá cierto aire desordenado o "agitanado", no será tan elegante con el Shabby; también podremos usar una paleta de color mucho más chillona que la que podríamos usar en el Shabby. Otro ejemplo, si en uno usabas encaje normal y corriente aquí usarás el guipur (un tipo de encaje con relieve mucho más complejo). La cuestión es combinar la elegancia de uno con la decadencia del otro. Aún así, que nadie se extrañe si un mismo trabajo es identificado por unos como Shabby Chic y por otros como Boho-chic.
  • Boho-chic. Shabby Chic style is already loaded, the works are delicate and flirty, use all kinds of lace, floral print, gauze, tulle, flowers... With the Boho the composition it'll was more overloaded with certain disordered or "agitated" manners. It'll not be so elegant as the Shabby. We can also use a much more garish color palette than we use in the Shabby too. The point is to combine the elegance of one with the decadence of the other. For example, if in first you used a simple lace, you can use guipure (a type of lace with a much more complex relief) for the second. Still, let nobody be surprised by if the same work is identified by some as Shabby Chic and by others as Boho-chic.

  • Boho-vintage. Éste bien podría llamarse Shabby chic vintage a secas y todos tan felices. Aquí tenemos una mezcla de todos los elementos del Boho-chic y los propios del estilo Vintage (telas con un aire hogareñas, papel y otros objetos "antiguos", imágenes "viejas"...) Pero, de nuevo, el Boho pretende darle un efecto más cargado, "decadente" y desordenado.
  • Boho-vintage. This one could well be called Shabby chic Vintage and that its all. Here we have a mixture of all the elements of the Boho-chic and those of the Vintage style (fabrics with a home environment, paper and other "old" objects, vintage images...) But, again, the Boho tries to give it a more charged effect, "decadent" and messy.
Un pequeño inciso aquí. Algunos llaman a este estilo Boho-Junk, en parte porque los trabajos son en su mayoría Junk Journals, pero las características que dan para definirlo como estilo son diferentes a las del Boho-vintage. Además, el Junk Journal es un trabajo (como puede ser un LO); un trabajo, además, que se puede realizar en casi cualquier estilo.
A small point here. Some call this style "Boho-Junk" because the works are mostly Junk Journals but the characteristics they give to define it as a proper style are different from those of Boho-vintage. Also, a Junk Journal is a work (such as a LO) that can be done in almost any style.

  • Boho-glamour. Quizás pensaste -como yo- que el "chic" del Boho-chic era sinónimo de "sofisticado". Pues no. El Boho-glamour representa ese "chic" por el acabado que se le da al trabajo. Pretende ser, lo que llamamos en España, un estilo "pijo". Aquí usaremos una paleta de colores elegante, combinaciones de negro con "xx", glitter... Y si de tejidos hablamos, usaremos telas nobles, cashmere, batik, piel... todo lo que transmita "lujo". Lo más curioso es que la carga "boho" de este subestilo está en los detalles, en los adornos. No hay "super explosión". Puedes hacer un mini album con paginas muy sencillas pero con detalles muy llamativos. 
  • Boho-glamour. Perhaps you thought - like me - that the "chic" of Boho-chic was synonymous with "sophisticated". Well, no. The Boho-glamour represents that "chic", that elegant touch  that is given to work. It pretends to be a "posh" style. Here we use an elegant color palette, combinations of black with another color, glitter... And if we talk about fabrics: noble fabrics, cashmere, batik, leather... everything that gives "luxury". The most curious thing is that the "boho" is in the details, in the embellishments. There is no "super explosion" of anything. You can make a mini album with very simple pages but with very striking details.

  • Boho-etno, Folk o Tribal. Intenta "emular" de manera irreal, como en un sueño, las diferentes culturas que asociamos con la idea de "étnico" con algún elemento folclórico, ya sea que usemos un sello de un "atrapa sueños" como que decoremos uno real (aquí no entrará la cultura francesa, por ejemplo). Ese toque irreal es lo que lo distingue del estilo Country, que busca plasmar de manera realista la esencia de una cultura en particular, sin fantasías.
  • Boho-ethno, Folk or Tribal. This try to "emulate" in an unreal way (as in a dream) the different cultures that we associate with the idea of "ethnic" with some folkloric element (not French culture here, for example). We can use a "catch dreams" stamp or altered a real one. That unreal touch is what distinguishes it from the Country style, which seeks to realistically capture the essence of a particular culture, without fantasies.
  • Boho-eco. El estilo Eco puede ser minimalista o todo lo contrario, pero siempre cuidando mucho la composición. Aquí ocurre lo mismo que con el Boho-chic o el Boho-vintage: ¡explosión de elementos! Es un estilo más bien "campestre" a diferencia del Eco con una paleta de colores neutra; usa telas ásperas, tela dvunitka, elementos bordados y/o a ganchillo, adornos caseros, flores secas... ¿Una mezcla entre Boho-vintage y Eco, tal vez?
  • Boho-eco. The Eco style can be minimalist or just the opposite but always takes care of the composition. The same thing happens here as with the Boho-chic or Boho-vintage: explosion of elements! It's rather "rural" style unlike the Eco with a neutral color palette, use rough fabrics, dvunitka fabric, embroidered and/or crochet elements, handmade embellishments, dried flowers... A mix between Boho-vintage and Eco, maybe?
Otro inciso aquí. Existe cierta controversia alrededor del llamado Boho-hippie, Hippie-chic, New Hippie o Hippie a secas. Algunos lo ven como un ESTILO, otro como una TEMÁTICA. Yo lo considero una temática porque la cultura hippie bebe directamente de la bohemia; guste más o guste menos, el "estilo" hippie no tiene nada de original, sólo adopta las ideas bohemias y las aplica a lo que son sus intereses. Además, he encontrado más ejemplos de temática hippie en CAS americano, por ejemplo, o en estilo Eco que en estilo Boho. No encuentro nada que lo haga "único", ningún elemento que me ayude aunque sea un poquito para llegar a considerarlo un subestilo del Boho. Tengo más problema con éste que con el Boho-chic (y eso ya es decir, así que si alguien tiene puntos válidos para pensar que es un estilo o subestilo ¡que me cuente!). En cambio, si lo considero una temática, realizar un trabajo de temática Hippie en estilo Boho es algo que prácticamente sale solo. La idea sería transmitir la emoción de libertad, de ser feliz, de un ambiente lleno de armonía... vamos, una reminiscencia del movimiento de los años 60. La paleta de colores quizás no deba ser tan exagerada como la del Boho-etno y sí más parecida a la del Boho-eco; se usa también podríamos pintura en spray, acuarelas, stencils y pasta de textura, etc para crear los fondos, tela de saco, adornos de punto, caseros, cuentas de madera... una combinación de ambos.
Another point here. There is some controversy surrounding about the Boho-hippie, Hippie-chic, New Hippie or just Hippie style. Some people see it as a STYLE and another as a THEME. I consider it as a theme because the hippie culture flow directly from the Bohemian like it or not. The "hippie style" has nothing original, only adopts bohemian philosophy and applies it to their interests. I've found more examples of "hippie" as a theme in American CAS or in Eco style than in Boho style. I don't find anything that makes it "unique", no elements that helps me to consider it as a sub-style of Boho. I've more problem with this style than with the Boho-chic (if someone has valid points to think it's a style or sub-style tell me, please!). By the way, if I consider it as a theme, doing a Hippie work in Boho style practically comes out by itself. The idea would be to convey the emotion of freedom, of being happy, of an environment full of harmony... (everything that refers to the 60s). The color palette not be as exaggerated as the Boho-ethno and more similar to the Boho-eco. We can use spray paint, watercolors, stencils and texture paste... to create backgrounds; sackcloth, knitted and handmade embellishments, wooden beads... a combination of both styles I think.

 Existe otro subestilo postmoderno llamado Bohemian Grunge que surge de la combinación entre l a filosofía bohemia y el movimiento estadounidense "grunge", pero este estilo aún está en proceso de creación, y los únicos ejemplos que he encontrado cuyos autores lo califican como "grunge" son CAS. No veo que este subestilo acabe de despegue del todo. Tampoco veo que busque lo que culturalmente conocemos como Hipster: un estilo "descuidado", una imitación de los "sin techo" pero fina (oseas se, pura fachada), que algunos ya consideran como un sinónimo de Boho-clásico diferente al estilo Gitano (Bohemio clásico). Un auténtico cacao, señores.
Another postmodern substyle is the Bohemian Grunge that arises from the combination between the Bohemian philosophy and the American movement "grunge" but this style is still in process and the only examples I've found (whose authors qualify it as "grunge") are CAS. I don't see that this sub-style ends up taking off at all. Neither I can see that this style looks the same as what we culturally know as Hipster: a "careless" style, an imitation of "homeless people" but be just for show, and some people consider this style as a synonym of Boho-classic, different to Gypsy style (Classic Bohemian). This is chaos.
Y hasta aquí llegamos con el estilo Boho.
Estas han sido las conclusiones a las que he llegado después de hacer mi investigación, la cual procuré que fuera lo más exhaustiva posible leyendo información en otro blogs, buscando sobre moda y decoración... Hay alguna información histórica de la que no estoy 100% segura (por falta de fuentes) así que si tenéis más información al respecto escribidme, por favor.

And that's it with Boho style. These were the conclusions that I reached after doing my research which I tried to be as exhaustive as possible by reading information on other blogs, looking ffashion and decoration magazines...
